Combrinck (OPOW) and Semmartin (DPOW) Earn BIG EAST Weekly Awards

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Lou Combrinck and Dara Semmartin earned BIG EAST weekly awards on Tuesday afternoon following No. 17 Liberty's 4-3 road win over No. 5 Duke in its season opener. Combrinck has been named the BIG EAST Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week, and Semmartin is the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.
This is Combrinck's third career BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week accolade, each of which have come in the last two seasons. Semmartin receives her first BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honor. She was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week once last year and garnered inclusion on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on one occasion as well.
Combrinck, a senior midfielder, scored the game-winning goal at Duke on a penalty corner in the 56th minute. Combrinck and the Lady Flames trailed 3-0 just over 17 minutes into the match before mounting a furious comeback with four unanswered goals. Her game winner came from the left side, a sweep into the cage off a Semmartin feed on Liberty's sixth and final penalty corner of the day.
Combrinck played a key role in two of the three earlier goals for the Lady Flames as well, notching a pair of assists. The Hillcrest, South Africa native assisted on Semmartin's second quarter penalty corner marker to trim the deficit to 3-1. Her feed to Zoé Gaillard, who scored a highlight reel one-timed goal at the 41:18 mark, tied the game at 3-all.
Semmartin, a sophomore defender, played a pivotal role in the comeback triumph against the No. 5-ranked Blue Devils as well. She finished with one goal, one assist and three points. Trailing 3-0 late in the second period, Semmartin scored the Lady Flames' first goal of the season on a penalty corner. In the fourth quarter, her pass set up Combrinck's game winner.
After allowing three goals in the first 17:07 of the game, Semmartin and the Liberty defense held the potent Duke attack scoreless for the final 42-plus minutes of the contest. Semmartin, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, now has 12 assists in 19 career games.
Combrinck, Semmartin and No. 17-ranked Liberty (1-0) will face James Madison (1-1) in their 2025 home opener, Wednesday afternoon. Game time is 2 p.m. from the Liberty Field Hockey Field and can be seen on ESPN+.
