LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty goalkeeper Diane Saint Martin has earned BIG EAST Field Hockey Freshman of the Week honors, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. Additionally, sophomore Dara Semmartin was tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Saint Martin, a native of Paris, France, receives her first career BIG EAST Freshman of the Week award. Meanwhile, Semmartin is being named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second time in her career and first this season. The Buenos Aires, Argentina native was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week in each of the first two weeks of this season (Sept. 2, Sept. 9) as well.
Liberty has earned six total weekly awards (two OPOW, two DPOW, one FOTW and one Honor Roll) through three weeks of the young season.
Saint Martin had a standout week in goal in games against UAlbany and No. 2 North Carolina, posting a 1-1 record, 1.01 goals-against-average (GAA), nine saves, a .818 save percentage and her first collegiate shutout. She recorded the shutout against UAlbany, making one save in 60 minutes of action in a 1-0 win. The save came with 27 seconds to play in regulation with the Great Danes threatening to even the score.
In Sunday's match at No. 2 UNC, Saint Martin was phenomenal with a season high and career-high eight saves while yielding only two goals in her time in net. After the Tar Heels scored exactly one minute into the game, Saint Martin yielded only one goal the rest of the way before UNC scored on an empty net late in the fourth quarter. Saint Martin is 4-1 on the year with a 1.61 GAA, 19 saves, a .704 save percentage and one shutout.
Semmartin, a sophomore defender, had one goal in last week's pair of games and was also strong on the defensive end while adding a defensive save. Semmartin's goal came at the end of the third quarter at No. 2 UNC, Liberty's lone tally of the day. It was her second of the season and cut the UNC lead to 2-1 at the time. Semmartin and the Liberty defense held a potent Tar Heels attack to three goals (one with an empty net) and had to withstand six UNC penalty corners.
In Friday's 1-0 shutout victory over UAlbany, Semmartin and the defense limited the Great Danes to two total shots and one penalty corner on the night. It was Liberty's first shutout of the 2025 season. Through five games, Semmartin has two goals (tied for No. 2 on team), five assists (No. 2 on team) and nine points (No. 2 on team). She currently ranks ninth nationally and third in the BIG EAST in assists per game (1.00).
Saint Martin, Semmartin and No. 6 Liberty (4-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) will meet Quinnipiac (4-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) in their BIG EAST Conference opener on Friday afternoon on the road. Game time is 1 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium in Hamden, Conn.
