Flames Are In The Hunt After Day 1 at The Hayt

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Facing a tournament field that features 10 top-50 ranked teams, Liberty finds itself in the mix after the first day of competition at The Hayt.
Liberty carded a 3-over par 291 during its first time around the Sawgrass Country Club (par 72, 6,966 yards) on Saturday. The Flames currently stand in eighth place.
The 15-team field faced windy conditions and on-and-off rain showers throughout the day, creating some challenging environments during the 33rd edition of the North Florida hosted tournament.
Only 19 players in the 84-man field posted individual scores in red figures, led by Alabama's Jonathan Griz. The 47th-ranked player in the country carded a 5-under par 67 to hold a one stroke lead over four players.
No. 18 Alabama leads the 15-team field after carding a 9-under par 279 and holds a four-shot edge over No. 28 Duke, who opened the event with a 5-under par 283.
No. 9 Virginia and No. 14 South Carolina share third place following an opening round 2-under par 286.
No. 4 Texas and No. 8 North Carolina, the top two ranked teams in the field, are just one shot ahead of the Flames after they both carded a 2-over par 290 on Saturday.
Four of Liberty's starting five enter tomorrow's second round inside the top 25. Ike Joy paced Liberty during play on Saturday with an even-par 72, his seventh round at par or better in 2024-25.
Luke Libbey, Michael Lugiano and Josh Ryan are one shot behind Joy in a share of 25th place following an opening-round 1-over par 73.
Liberty was one of the steadiest teams on Saturday, leading the field with 62 pars. Flames also ranked second in par-3 scoring average (3.15). Individually, Ryan led the field, paring 15-of-18 holes, while Joy ranked second in the field with 14 pars.
Play is scheduled to get underway tomorrow at 7:30 a.m., with the Flames set to tee off at 9 a.m. However, more inclement weather is forecasted for the greater Jacksonville area that could impact tomorrow's second round.
