RALEIGH, N.C. – Liberty's Bethany Tate continued a fast start to her collegiate outdoor track & field career, Thursday at the Raleigh Relays. The freshman's personal-best 49-0.75 effort in the women's shot put ranks No. 1 in CUSA this season.
After achieving a personal best of 47-4.25 during the indoor season, Tate matched or improved upon that distance on all five of her legal shot put attempts Thursday morning. Tate's 49-0.75 performance came on her very first put, earning a seventh-place finish in the competition (first among freshmen). The native of Odessa, Texas now sits No. 4 on Liberty's all-time outdoor women's shot put list.
Tate had opened the outdoor portion of her collegiate career on Saturday, heaving the discus a personal-best 154-11 to capture the Bob Davidson Team Challenge individual title.
Liberty's men's shot putters also fared well on Thursday, with Trevor Veenstra (eighth place, personal-best 54-5.25), Jordae Edwards (10th, 53-6.5) and Beau Backes (14th, outdoor personal-best 52-10) all ranking among the top third of the 53-member field.
Veenstra's 54-5.25 put ranks No. 1 in CUSA through the early stages of the 2025 outdoor season.
Competing for the first time in a year due to injury, Ethan Mylin threw the javelin 188-6 to net a 14th-place finish.
