LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty will divide its track & field athletes between two different meets this week. A group of throwers and women's distance runners will compete in the Raleigh Relays, Thursday through Saturday at NC State. The remainder of the Flames and Lady Flames will stay in the Hill City for the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational, Friday and Saturday at the University of Lynchburg.
How to Follow the Flames and Lady Flames
Running events at both meets will be video streamed, with the Raleigh Relays airing on ACC Network Extra and the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational available on YouTube.
Live results will also be provided, courtesy of Flash Results (Raleigh Relays) and Blue Ridge Timing (Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational).
Weather Report
Cloud cover and temperatures are both expected to increase as the Raleigh Relays progress, going from sunny skies and a high in the upper 60s on Thursday to cloudy skies and a high approaching 80 on Saturday.
Cloudy skies are forecasted for both days of the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational with a high around 70 on Friday and near 80 degrees on Saturday.
Throwers Off and Running
The Liberty throwers opened their outdoor season in impressive fashion at the Bob Davidson Team Challenge. Christian Hicks (personal-best 184-8) and Beau Backes (177-11) went 1-2 in the men's discus, while freshman Bethany Tate (personal-best 154-11) took top honors in the women's discus.
The full throws squad is set to compete at the Raleigh Relays this week, including the season debuts of All-American women's hammer thrower Paola Bueno, women's javelin program record holder Addilae Watts and men's hammer freshman record holder Kellen Kimes.
Follow-Up for Fairley
Last time we saw Adelyn Fairley on the track, she was busy sweeping the CUSA indoor women's 3K and 5K titles. Fast forward a month, and Fairley will open her final collegiate outdoor season with a 5K at the Raleigh Relays.
A year ago, Fairley clocked a personal-best 33:43.36 10K at Raleigh.
Encore, Encore!
The Liberty men's 4 x 100 relay team of Eddy Vu, CUSA Men's Track Athlete of the Week Troy McKnight, Revell Webster and Omari Lewis placed third at the Bob Davidson Team Challenge in a CUSA-leading time of 40.50, despite a shaky final handoff. The eighth-fastest quartet in program history is set to race again on Saturday at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational.
Another Liberty relay grouping which displayed considerable potential last week was the women's 4 x 400 squad of Maddy Merritt, Mahogany Mobley, Marianah Scott and Shania Adderley. Their 3:44.28 clocking was the fastest by a Lady Flames 4 x 400 squad since 2019.
