NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Liberty Flames tennis team dropped its fourth consecutive contest, coming up short 5-2 at No. 39 Yale on Sunday. The Flames played in three ranked matchups on the road this week, collecting two match points in each contest.
The Flames narrowly missed the doubles point, falling 6-4 on court one and 7-5 on court two. Liberty earned the first singles match with Rodrigo Santiago Arraez besting Eric Li 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles match.
Yale responded with four consecutive singles matches to earn the match win. The Bulldogs earned the match-clinching fourth point on court one as Vignesh Gogineni upended Joaquim Almeida 6-4, 7-6 (2).
Liberty earned one back after one of the closest singles matches any Flame has been in this season. Carl Roothman, matched up against Zhengqing Ji, needed three tiebreakers to decide a winner. The Flame fell in the first set with a 7-2 tiebreaker but came back in the second with a 7-5 tiebreaker. With the match already clinched, the two entered a back-and-forth super tiebreaker with Roothman ultimately prevailing 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 1-0 (8).
Liberty falls to 1-4 away from Lynchburg this spring. The Flames fall in their second all-time matchup against the Bulldogs and for the second-straight season.
