LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty men's tennis team fell 5-2 at home against Princeton despite an early lead on Saturday night. Liberty jumped ahead with a pair of ranked 6-2 doubles wins, topping Princeton's No. 51 and No. 113 pairs. The Tigers responded with five consecutive singles triumphs.
The Flames' No. 23 pair of Joaquim Almeida and Siwanat Auytayakul improved to 9-3 together this year with a 6-2 triumph over No. 51 Paul Inchauspe and Filippos Astreinidis. Liberty clinched the doubles point with Chase Robinson and Trey Stinchcomb's first-ever ranked win together topping No. 113 Milan Markowitz and Matthew Bosancic.
Despite the 1-0 advantage and a lead in multiple first sets in singles, Princeton began to storm back. The Tigers picked up two quick victories on courts two and three. Princeton secured the match-winning fourth point on court five with Aleksandar Mitric coming back to top Chase Robinson 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Ernst Gouws came back with a measure of revenge, overcoming a tough first set loss against Meecah Bigun on court six. Gouws responded with two grueling set victories to earn the 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-5 triumph.
Princeton has now topped the Flames in back-to-back seasons. The Tigers were victorious at home 6-1 on Feb. 4.
