LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty (8-3-4, 3-0-2 CUSA) secures its third consecutive victory, all in conference play, with a 2-1 home win over Kennesaw State (1-9-4, 0-4-1 CUSA). Halle Engle scored and added an assist, while Ivy Garner assisted on both tallies.
Engle started the scoring after Ivy Garner initiated a premier scoring chance in the 19th minute. The senior forward drove the ball from the outside of the penalty area, to the corner of the goal area and the endline. She directed a cross to a crashing Engle, who sent the ball past the Owls' goalkeeper, Charlee Bernal, in the center of the net. The score was Engle's fifth of the season.
Liberty kept its foot on the gas throughout the majority of the game, registering 21 shots to three from Kennesaw State. Bernal held firm to keep the Owls within striking distance with 11 saves.
Freshman Lauren Flax extended the lead in the 50th minute. She received a long, low cross from Engle on the other side of the penalty area and sent a strike to the far side of the net. The goal was Flax's second of the year after getting her first in the season opener at East Carolina (Aug. 14).
Kennesaw played well, holding firm despite the 2-0 deficit. The Owls held the Lady Flames to just six shots in the second half. Addison Neal cut the lead in half with a pristine shot from outside the penalty area in the 81st minute. Her strike bounced in off the crossbar for Neal's first of the season.
Liberty re-inserted its starters after allowing the score and kept the Owls out of the attacking zone to finish the game.
The Lady Flames improve to 6-3 all-time against Kennesaw State and move to 3-3-2 at home this season.
