Ryan and Flames Climb to Top of Quail Valley Leaderboard

VERO BEACH, Fla. – After finding itself near the bottom of the leaderboard early in the day, a strong finish for the Flames has Liberty in contention at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational.
Following the first nine holes of play, Liberty was tied for 13th place in the 16-team field. However, the Flames found the Quail Valley Golf Club (par 72, 7,401 yards) much more to their liking during the final 27 holes on Sunday.
Liberty enters tomorrow's final round tied for second place and is one shot off the lead following a stellar 24-under par 552 (279-273). The Flames' 15-under par 273 was the best team score in the 16-team field during the afternoon flight.
The Flames share second place with Kansas (24-under par 552/278-274) and Northwestern (24-under par 552/273-279). The three teams trail tournament leader Minnesota by one shot (25-under par 551/277-274).
Liberty's dramatic climb up the leaderboard was due largely to the play of Josh Ryan and Michael Lugiano.
Ryan carded back-to-back rounds of 6-under par 66 and is currently tied for first place with a 12-under par 132 (66-66). Ryan has now played 6-of-8 collegiate career rounds at this course in the 60s thanks to 14 birdies on Sunday.
Lugiano matched Ryan with 14 birdies to pace the 84-man field in the statistical category. Lugiano is tied for fifth place and is three shots off the overall individual pace after carding a 9-under par 135 (68-67).
The 16-team field will return to the course on Monday morning for a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. for the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational's final round. Tomorrow's round will be Liberty's final 18 holes of play of the fall tournament season.
