LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Flames tennis team has announced the addition of Trey Stinchcomb. Joining the Flames as a transfer, Stinchcomb arrives as a former Clemson Tiger and Tennessee Volunteer for his redshirt senior season. He joins transfer Carl Roothman (Oklahoma State) and freshman Siwanat Auytayakul (freshman) as new members of Liberty's 2024-25 roster.
Stinchcomb was a vital piece the past three years for Clemson, helping lead the Tigers to a 4-3 mark in ACC Men's Tennis Championship appearances, including a quarterfinal finish in his freshman season (2022). Stinchcomb transferred to Clemson following a single redshirt season at Tennessee in the shortened 2019-20 year. As a recruit, Stinchcomb was a highly-touted doubles player and a marque singles piece, signing with the Volunteers as the No. 1 recruit in doubles and the No. 49 singles recruit (tennisrecruiting.net).
"Our coaching staff is privileged to work with Trey. He is a great athlete and an experienced and motivated teammate," Head Coach Derek Schwandt said. "Trey will be ready to embrace our core values of Joy, Smart Work and Team. He will push his teammates to improve in those key areas."
The redshirt senior joins Liberty with an overall 23-27 singles and a 13-27 doubles mark after three years at Clemson. Stinchcomb enjoyed the most playing time in his redshirt sophomore season. He played to a 9-13 singles mark and a 9-14 doubles record.
Stinchcomb secured a singles flight at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Oct. 2023. Needing four victories in a single day to grab the title, Stinchcomb bested two foes from Vanderbilt, an opponent from UNCW and bested Georgia's Parker Mariencheck in the final 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Stinchcomb is the third addition and second signing via transfer to the Flames' 2024-25 roster following Carl Roothman, who signed from Oklahoma State on Thursday.
The Flames (17-8) are looking to improve on a 2024 spring season in which the team achieved a high ranking of No. 45 in the ITA team rankings. The spring season concluded with a second-place finish in the 2024 CUSA Men's Tennis Championship and a semifinal run at the 2024 UTR Sports NIT Championships.
