LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty Flames men's tennis has announced the signing of Carl Roothman. A transfer from Oklahoma State, Roothman joins Siwanat Auytayakul in the Flames 2024-25 class.
Oklahoma State advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship in consecutive seasons in 2023 and 2024 with Roothman playing a key role in the Cowboy's postseason runs. As a freshman in 2023, Roothman contributed in four postseason matches, two in the Big 12 Championship and two in the NCAA Championship, helping lead Oklahoma State to a 4-2 win over No. 20 Florida (May 5).
"It's an honor to have Carl join the Liberty Flames and continue our connection with South Africa," Head Coach Derek Schwandt said. "Carl is a great competitor and most importantly a great team player. He will improve our team on and off the court as we seek to take our fight to the next level."
The junior joins Liberty with an overall 15-21 singles record and a 17-19 doubles mark at Oklahoma State. As a freshman, Roothman collected a 12-13 singles record (7-6 fall, 5-7 spring) and an 11-13 doubles mark (4-5 fall, 7-8 spring). As a sophomore in the fall season, he compiled a 2-7 singles mark and a 3-4 doubles record. In the spring, Roothman earned a 1-1 singles mark and a 3-2 doubles record.
Hailing from Stellenbosch, South Africa, Roothman joins his cousin, Liberty Assistant Coach Christiaan Worst, as a Liberty Flame. Roothman continues a legacy of Flames from South Africa and will be joining Ernst Gouws, also from Stellenbosch, on the 24-25 roster. The Flames have two recent South African graduates, Christiaan Worst (2021-23) and Thando Longwe-Smit (2020-24).
The 2024 Flames (17-8) are seeking to improve on a spring season in which the team reached a high of No. 45 in the ITA team rankings. The season concluded with a second-place finish in the 2024 CUSA Men's Tennis Championship and a semifinal finish at the 2024 UTR Sports NIT Championships.
