CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Liberty's Kyle Harkabus made his Friday trip to the Charlotte Invitational a worthwhile excursion. He claimed victory in the invitational section of the men's 1,500 in a new personal-best time of 3:42.10.
Harkabus outraced Duke's Jake Winslow (3:42.57) for his first 1,500 triumph since the 2021 Aggie Classic. The senior from Senoia, Ga., slashed two seconds off his previous personal best of 3:44.02, leapfrogging Colin Schultz and Coach Isaac Wendland to reach the No. 2 spot in program history.
Liberty alum Ryan Drew (program-record 3:41.26 in 2022), the only Flame ever to run the event faster, was also part of the field on Friday. Now training with Greenville Track Club-ELITE, Drew finished fifth in the heat and eighth overall, clocking 3:45.53.
Friday's performance put Harkabus into contention for his first NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round appearance. Last season, a time of 3:42.94 or faster was required to qualify for the meet in the men's 1,500.
Nicholas Kiprotich was Liberty's only other runner to compete in the Queen City on Friday. He clocked 14:31.34 in his first 5K of the season, placing 12th in the event's invitational section. Liberty now boasts four of CUSA's seven fastest men's 5K runners this season (also Harkabus, Edwin Kiprop and Nathan Moore).
