
Klunder Garners Second ASUN Defensive Player of the Week of the Season

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Defender Madeleine Klunder has received the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week award, the conference announced Tuesday. It is the second of the same award for Klunder this season, previously being selected on March 5.
The award is Liberty's third of the 2024 season and Klunder's second of her career. Midfielder Mackenzie Lehman most recently received the honor on March 12. Liberty leads the ASUN with three Defensive Player of the Week awards this spring.
Klunder is the fifth player in program history to win multiple weekly awards in the same season, joining Lizzy Ferguson (two DPotW, 2023), Mia Toscano (PotW, DPotw, 2022), Brianna McCaffrey (three DPotW, 2019) and Carly White (two PotW, 2019).
The defender helped lead Liberty to an 18-11 win on the road at Stetson in the Lady Flames' ASUN opener on Friday with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Klunder and Liberty also fell to Florida 23-3, with the defender tallying a game-high five ground balls along with three caused turnovers.
The Fairfax Station, Va. native leads Liberty with 30 ground balls (No. 3 ASUN) and ranks second on the team with 22 caused turnovers (No. 2 ASUN). The defender ranks No. 32 in the country and No. 3 in the ASUN with 2.73 ground balls per game. Klunder also ranks No. 20 in the nation and No. 3 in the ASUN with 2.00 caused turnovers per game.
Klunder leads a Liberty defensive unit that ranks in the top five in the country in multiple categories. The Lady Flames rank No. 1 nationally with 15.73 caused turnovers per game and 173 total caused turnovers this season. Liberty ranks No. 3 in the country and No. 1 in the ASUN with 22.64 ground balls per game and 249 total ground balls (No. 4 nationally).
Liberty (4-7, 1-0 ASUN) prepares for two home Atlantic Sun matchups this week. The Lady Flames face Coastal Carolina (7-4, 1-0 ASUN) at 1 p.m. Thursday and go against Queens (7-5, 1-0 ASUN) on Saturday at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.
