CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Liberty's Indea Cartwright continued her impressive start to the season, winning the women's 100 hurdles title on Friday at the Virginia Grand Prix.
Women's Day 1 Recap
Cartwright, who has already broken the Liberty women's 100 hurdles record twice this season, did not do so on Friday. But her wind-legal time of 13.51 gave Cartwright her first victory of the 2024 outdoor campaign.
Cartwright's four 100 hurdles races this year have produced the four fastest times ever recorded by a Lady Flame, topped by her record 13.28 effort from the Florida Relays on March 30.
The Lady Flames won both heats of the 100 hurdles on Friday, as Amani Hankton took the opening section in a personal-best 14.21. That time was good for fourth overall in the event.
Liberty's women's triple jumpers were some of the athletes who benefited most from the gusty winds blowing through Lannigan Field all afternoon. Triple jumping for the first time since capturing the CUSA indoor title in February, Makenzy Mizera finished as the runner-up at 41-6. That mark will put her in the mix for an NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet berth, as only 18 women in the East Region had jumped longer in 2024 entering the weekend.
Rebecca Allen (fourth place, personal-best 38-6.75) and Maddy Hunt (fifth, season-best 35-10.75) joined Mizera among the event's top five performers.
Liberty's first competitor of the day, Efe Latham came in third in the women's hammer with a 168-4 effort.
Mia Bowers (fourth place) and Colleen Schaner (tied for eighth) both successfully cleared 12-1.25 in the women's pole vault. Schaner grabbed the No. 10 spot on Liberty's all-time list in the process, joining teammates Bowers, Katie Urbine and Emory Pafford on that chart.
Patasha Bryan totaled 3,103 points during Friday's four heptathlon events, giving her a 16-point advantage heading into Saturday. She bookended her day with personal bests in the two running events, including 14.40 for the 100 hurdles and 25.40 for the 200. Bryan also topped all of the heptathletes in the shot put (39-6).
Men's Day 1 Recap
The only two Liberty men's athletes to compete in track events on Friday in Charlottesville, Luke Anderson (third place, personal-best 14.35) and Albrey Gossett (fifth, season-best 14.46) both notched top-five showings in the men's 110 hurdles.
Anderson's effort, which took down his previous best of 14.49, ties him with Tim O'Donnell for eighth place in program history.
Hunter Flack successfully navigated the wind conditions to make it over 15-7 on his third attempt and secure third place in the men's pole vault.
Freshman Jason Hayes heaved the hammer a personal-best 160-6 to come in ninth.
Making his first appearance in a Liberty uniform, freshman Samuel O'Regan sits seventh in the decathlon with 3,078 points at the halfway mark. That is 150 more points than he scored on day one of the 49er Classic decathlon a month ago.
Competing unattached, Daniel Van Duren sits third in the decathlon standings with 3,636 points. At this juncture, he is 58 points ahead of the pace which saw him capture the 2023 ASUN decathlon title with a personal-best score of 6,617.
