LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty's Madeleine Klunder was named the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Klunder showcased a game-high four caused turnovers in a 16-13 loss to Duke on Feb. 27 while also grabbing three ground balls.
The recognition is Klunder's first in her career and Liberty's first weekly award of 2024. The Lady Flames led the league with four ASUN Defensive Player of the Week awards in 2023. The recognition is Liberty's 13th all-time ASUN Defensive Player of the Week honor in six seasons in the conference.
Klunder leads the No. 1 ranked team in the country in caused turnovers (16.6) with 14 total. Led by Klunder, Liberty's defense has been a bright spot despite the 1-4 record. The Lady Flames rank third nationally in total draw controls with 83 despite playing just five games in the young season.
The redshirt sophomore ranks No. 4 in the country (first in the ASUN) with 2.8 caused turnovers per game and No. 7 in total caused turnovers while playing in fewer games than those with more caused turnovers.
Klunder has also totaled 11 ground balls in 2024, ranking third on the team. After starting 16 games in 2023, the Fairfax Station, Va. native has stepped up her game in a key role for Liberty. Klunder has already tied her total of 14 caused turnovers in 2023 just five games into the 2024 season.
The Lady flames return to action for a Wednesday meting against Duke at home. Fist draw is set for 3 p.m. from the Liberty Lacrosse Field.
