Both Liberty's offensive and defensive units had their chance to shine during the Flames' annual Spring Football game, Saturday afternoon, at Williams Stadium.
A dreary morning gave way to clear skies at kickoff with the 90-minute scrimmage played under sunny skies where Flames Nation got its first look at Liberty's 2024 roster.
Liberty's offense, which finished 2023 ranked No. 4 in the country (499.1 yards per game), picked up right where it left off to open the scrimmage.
Conference USA MVP quarterback Kaidon Salter hit Coastal Carolina transfer wide receiver Tyson Mobley in stride for a 60-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the afternoon.
The Flames' defensive unit controlled the pace of play during the rest of the first half, taking a 38-10 lead into the halftime intermission based upon the coaching staff's scrimmage scoring system. The defense scored on several three-and-out stops, a third-down sack and two stops on attempted field goals. Liberty's only other offensive points during the first half came on a 35-yard field goal by Brayden Beck.
A non-traditional offensive player tried to spark the offense during the first half. A pass attempt by Appalachian State transfer quarterback Ryan Burger was tipped by FWAA Freshman All-America defensive end TJ Bush and was caught by offensive lineman Xavior Gray, thrilling his fellow offensive linemen.
Liberty's offense looked like it was going to add its second touchdown of the game midway through the second quarter. With the first-team offense back on the field, Salter led the Flames into the red zone. However, Salter's seven-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Treon Sibley was called back due to a penalty, followed by two pass breakups in the end zone by linebacker Caeden Callahan and safety Christian Bodnar.
During halftime of the scrimmage, Flames Head Coach Jamey Chadwell spoke to the crowd, thanking them for their support today and throughout the spring. The second-year head coach also announced the team's most improved players at each position during the spring.

During the second half, Liberty ran two 10-minute periods of running clock to finish off the 11-one-11 drills portion of the spring game. Liberty's offense won the second half of the day, 20-15.
The 20 additional minutes of action saw Beck knocked another field goal (34-yarder), while Nick Brown connected on a 39-yard kick.
Returning quarterback Nate Hampton found Sibley open on a 38-yard touchdown pass, while newcomer Jayden Bradford threw a 25-yard touchdown pass on the scrimmage's last play to close out the freshman's first spring practice with Liberty.
Following the scrimmage, Chadwell and Liberty's full team moved into the Liberty Indoor Practice Facility for an autograph session, thrilling the gathered crowd.
The Flames will now turn their attention to summer workouts and their preparation for defending their 2023 Conference USA title. Liberty opens its 2024 season at home against Campbell on August 31 and will play their first conference game at New Mexico State on September 7.
