Liberty Bests James Madison 4-0, Achieves 2-0 Weekend Sweep

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lady Flames tennis team dominated James Madison 4-0 on Sunday to achieve a 2-0 weekend without dropping a single match point.
Maria Turchetto led Liberty (3-1) to the sweep of JMU (2-4). The freshman was involved in the clinching matches for both the doubles and singles rounds.
Freshman Sadie Daavetilla (first career spring singles win) and Senior Esther Lovato picked up their first singles wins of the season.
The Lady Flames battled to clinch the doubles point on court three. Turchetto and Davtyan fought off a comeback bid from JMU, dominating the tiebreaker to win 7-6 (7-1).
Liberty improves to 8-6 all-time facing JMU.

"I'm proud of how the girls stepped up and competed with a lot of grit today. I'm not sure that we had our best tennis, but we had a lot of fight. We were doing this for each other and also for Tiff (Tiffany Nguyen) who is in the hospital right now, we wanted to be able to battle hard for her. I think the girls were able to lock in and do that on each court. To God be the glory!"

How it Happened
Doubles
- Liberty dropped the first point on court one to begin the day. Daavetilla, filling in for Tiffany Nguyen, was paired with Maria Juliana Parra Romero for the first time. The two fell to Ines Oliveira and Daria Munteanu, 6-3.
- The Lady Flames evened the score on court two with Daniella O'Neill and Priscila Janikian besting Hope Moulin and Cate Broerman 6-4.
- In a match that lasted over an hour, Davtyan and Turchetto held fast against Reka Matko and Hayley Glen, 7-6 (7-1) to secure the doubles point.
Singles
- Lovato secured her first singles win of 2024 and her 108th singles victory of her career. The senior topped Oliveira 6-3, 6-0.
- Daavetilla stepped up for the Lady Flames lineup in the No. 6 singles match. The freshman handled Sara Sadadanovic with a pair of 6-3 sets.
- Turchetto clinched the match-winning fourth point on court five with a statement 6-3, 6-4 victory over Matko 6-3, 6-4.
- O'Neill (3-0 singles) was nearing a victory when Liberty clinched the win. The freshman owned a 6-3, 4-4 lead over Houlin.
- Parra Romero and Davtyan were mounting a comeback at the time of Liberty's victory, ultimately having their matches go with an unfinished result.
