LYNCHBURG, Va. – Maria Juliana Parra Romero secured the match-winning point following a marathon four-plus hour match to help Liberty top Delaware 4-3 on Saturday from the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
Liberty (4-1) extends its home-match winning streak to four matches to kick off the 2024 season. Delaware drops to 2-3 following the defeat.
Delaware secured the doubles point with wins on courts three and one. The two teams traded blows in singles, with the lead changing four times in the four-hour 24-minute contest.
Liberty regained the lead at 3-2 with singles match wins from Marina Davtyan, Esther Lovato and Sadie Daavetilla. Delaware tied the match at 3-3 with a three set victory on court five.
Parra Romero, following an hour long doubles match, battled through a grueling three-hour match on court one. Facing Slade Coetzee, Parra Romero dropped an intense first set tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6). The sophomore persevered, fighting off multiple comeback attempts, hanging on to grab the second set 7-5. Parra Romero took care of business in a competitive set the score may not reflect, to win the match for the Lady Flames 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-1.
The two programs met for the first time on Saturday. Delaware is set to join Liberty and become members of Conference USA for the 2025-26.
Thoughts from Head Coach Jeff Maren
"I thought that we showed a lot of grit, guts and intestinal fortitude. That's what was necessary because the team's talent level was pretty equal. It really came down to who handle the key moments best and I feel like we did enough of those to win the match."
On Parra Romero
"Juli is somebody that everybody counts on, she believes that she can win no matter what the situation is. When she's down a set and down 5-4, I don't think anybody was thinking she was going to lose. In that third set, the way that she composed herself with all the pressure on her and all eyes on her, she handled that well and it just it increases the respect level that we as coaches and players have for her. To God be the Glory."
Thoughts from Maria Juliana Parra Romero
"It was a really physical match, she (Slade Coetzee) is not the type of player that I'm used to playing at the number one spot. She was really hard to read at some points so I knew that I had to be very physical with her. I changed my game and I was able to stay in there, be mentally tough, and I think that helped me to get back in the second set and win the match."
