BOSTON, Mass. – Four top performers from Liberty's CUSA champion women's cross country team carried their success onto the track at Saturday's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Leading the way was freshman Allie Zealand, who shattered the program 3K record with her 9:07.33 effort at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
Zealand's 9:07.33 clocking in her collegiate track debut placed 21st overall out of 128 women's 3K runners on the day, including 14th among college entrants. She shattered both the Liberty record (9:24.67 by Calli Doan at the 2023 ASUN Championship) and the Liberty freshman standard (9:41.80 by Marie Hostetler at the 2021 ASUN Championship) in the process.
Ava Gordon also competed at the 3K distance on Saturday, dipping under 10:00 for the first time in her collegiate career at 9:46.02.
Two weeks after racing at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, Adelyn Fairley posted her first indoor sub-16:00 5K. Her 15:58.74 effort improved upon Fairley's 16:17.62 clocking from this same meet a year ago and trails only Ednah Kurgat's program-record 15:47.89 from 2016 on Liberty's all-time list.
Isabela Ross grabbed the No. 4 spot on that list with a 16:26.28 performance that lopped more than 20 seconds off her previous lifetime best for the 5K distance.
Now an assistant on Liberty's coaching staff, Doan also raced at Boston on Saturday and recorded a new 5K personal best of 15:39.06.
