LYNCHBURG, Va. – In the final BIG EAST weekly awards of the regular season, Liberty's Dara Semmartin has earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week distinction for the first time.
In addition to Semmartin's accolade, redshirt sophomore Tori Griffiths has been tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for a second consecutive week.
Semmartin and Griffiths garner the awards based on their performances in Liberty's pair of games this past week at James Madison (last Tuesday) and at home against Georgetown (last Friday, regular season finale). Semmartin is the second Lady Flame to be named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week this season, joining midfielder Josefina Tomasi (Oct. 22). She earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll accolades two weeks ago (Oct. 22) as well.
The Lady Flames received 15 BIG EAST awards and one national honor in 10 weeks of regular season competition.
Semmartin tallied three assists in two games last week. The freshman notched two assists at JMU, assisting on both of Tuti Dell Anna's second half penalty corner goals. In Friday's 6-0 triumph over Georgetown to secure a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, Semmartin assisted on Ellie Livingston's penalty corner goal at the 23:40 mark, putting Liberty ahead 2-0 at the time.
Semmartin and the Liberty defense allowed only two total Hoyas shots (one on goal) in preserving a sixth shutout of 2024 (third in BIG EAST play). Through 17 games of her first season, she leads the team with 11 assists and has one goal for 13 points. Semmartin currently ranks 13th nationally and third in the BIG EAST in assists per game (0.65).
Griffiths delivered strong performances against JMU and Georgetown, totaling two goals, four points, six shots, five shots on goal and one game-winning goal in a pair of starts. In the road match against JMU, she shared the team lead with three total shots in what was her first career start.
In her first career home start on Friday with No. 18 Liberty needing a win over the Georgetown Hoyas to continue its season, Griffiths set a new career high with two goals in the 6-0 victory. She set the tone for the Lady Flames early with a sixth minute goal and added another tally from in front of the cage at the 26:03 mark. The redshirt sophomore forward has scored all three of her career goals in the last three games.
Semmartin, Griffiths and No. 18 Liberty (10-7, 4-3 BIG EAST) are gearing up for this upcoming weekend's 2024 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship at Providence's Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Lady Flames are the No. 4 seed for the tournament and will face top-seeded and No. 10-ranked Connecticut (15-3, 6-1 BIG EAST), the BIG EAST regular season champion, on Friday. Game time is 1 p.m. The contest will be carried live on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
