
Liberty in 9th Place after Day 1 of Ka’anapali Classic

LAHAINA, Hawaii – The Flames find themselves in the middle of the 20-man field following first round action at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.
Liberty carded a 9-under par 275 during its first trip around the picturesque Ka'anapali Golf Club - Royal Ka'anapali Course (par 71, 6,700 yards) in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii.
Playing in its first event since September due to two canceled tournaments in October, the Flames were paced by Josh Ryan's 4-under par 67, putting him in a share of 19th place. The junior led the Flames with seven birdies, which ranked third in the 123-man field.
Ike Joy finished one shot behind Ryan and shares 29th place following a 3-under par 68. During holes 1-9, Joy carded six birdies and an eagle on the par-5, No. 9 hole (485 yards) to post a front nine score of 29.
No. 2 Oklahoma closed day one of the three-day event with a 20-under par 264 and leads North Florida by two strokes (18-under par 266). Indiana and No. 5 LSU share third place following a 16-under par 268.
A total of 60 players finished the first day of the Hawaii hosted tournament in red figures, including three of Liberty's five starters.
The Flames' Michael Lugiano is tied for 38th place after a 2-under par 69. Oklahoma's Jaxon Dowell is the overnight individual leader following an 8-under par 63.
The 20-team field will return to the Ka'anapali Golf Club - Royal Ka'anapali Course on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. HST/2:30 p.m. EST to begin round two of the tournament.
