MIAMI, Fla. – Liberty women's soccer's Conference USA Championship run came to an end with a 1-0 loss to No. 1 seed FIU on Sunday. The Panthers scored early in the second half off a penalty kick from Deborah Bien-Aime. Liberty, currently ranking No. 47 in the RPI rankings, awaits the result of the NCAA Selection Show airing at 4 p.m. Monday.
The No. 2 seed Lady Flames (15-2-4, 6-1-2 CUSA) suffered both of their losses this season to FIU. Liberty struggled to generate chances in the FIU defensive zone, unable to generate single shot in the opening 45 minutes.
The Panthers' Noemi Paquin drew a penalty kick, drawing a foul from Kayla Magee entering the 18-yard box. FIU's Bien-Aime tallied her first goal, nailing her shot on the right side of the frame.
Liberty continued to push in the second half but was restricted by a stout Panther's back line. The Lady Flames saw their best chance when Ivy Garner beat her defender and sent a cross towards Halle Engle and Avery Paulson. FIU fronted the play well and despite a collision that warranted a review, no penalty kick was awarded.
The Lady Flames concluded the game with six shots and one corner opportunity.
FIU secures its first CUSA Championship title in program history and receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
After the game, Liberty's Ivy Garner, Bri Myers and Sabrina Marks were awarded sections to the 2024 CUSA All-Tournament Team.
Liberty enjoyed a historic 2024 season, claiming it's first-ever national ranking, win over a ranked program and a share of the CUSA Regular Season Championship.
