CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In its first fall event as a full team, the Liberty women's tennis performed well at the 2024 ITA Women's Atlantic Regional in Charlottesville, Va. The Lady Flames combined for an overall 9-9 record with a 7-7 singles mark and a 2-2 doubles record.
Liberty had five players participate in the initial qualifying round of the event, needing two victories to advance to the main draw. Four Lady Flames won their first match but just freshman Yu-Yun Chen secured two victories to advance to the main draw. All players picked up at least one singles victory last week with Chen as the only player with two singles wins.
In the main draw of the singles bracket on Friday, Daniella O'Neill kicked off the day with a comeback third-set victory over West Virginia's Laura Villanueva. In the third set, O'Neill faced a 3-5 deficit but roared back, rattling off four straight games to secure the triumph. Chen fell in the first round, 6-1, 6-4 to Maryland's Kallista Liu despite winning three consecutive games when down 5-1 in the second set.
Doubles showed the same fight on Friday with all three doubles participating. Sadie Daavettila and Chen were matched against James Madison and faced a 7-4 deficit. The duo dug in and went on a roll with three straight games to force a 7-7 tiebreaker and continued to roll in the tiebreak to claim the 8-7 (4) triumph.
O'Neill and Turchetto were paired against George Washington's duo and trailed 7-5 in the match. The pair battled to tie the match at 7-7 and edged their opponents to grab the 8-7 (5) victory. Liberty's final pair of Yoanna Radulova and Anika Lemus fought to an 8-3 defeat to Towson.
On Saturday, doubles could not pick up a win, including the Daavettila/Chen pair retiring before the match due to an injury. Singles followed suit with O'Neill falling to the tournament's No. 1 seed, Virginia's Annabelle Xu, 6-1, 7-5. Chen fell in a back-draw match, 7-5, 6-2 to Norfolk State's Sofiya Tsitavets.
Chen paced Liberty with a 3-2 record including a 2-2 singles mark and a 1-1 doubles record.
