LYNCHBURG, Va. – In its last fall event as a full team, the Liberty women's tennis enjoyed a 16-3 overall record (4-2 doubles, 12-1 singles) hosting the six-team LU Hidden Dual this weekend. The Lady Flames' Daniella O'Neill shared the title as the LU Hidden Dual Singles Champion with a 3-0 record playing in the No. 1 spot in a dual lineup format.
Liberty, playing just four players on two of three days, matched up against Arkansas State Friday (0-2 doubles, 4-0 singles), William & Mary Saturday (2-0 doubles, 4-1 singles) and Richmond on Sunday (2-0 doubles, 4-0 singles). The Lady Flames including O'Neill, had three players, Maria Turchetto and Anika Lemus, with a 3-0 singles record. Freshman Yu-yun Chen won her only singles match of the weekend.
As a doubles pair, O'Neill and Turchetto prepare for the ITA Conference Masters Championship in Rome, Ga. beginning on Nov. 7. The duo went 2-1 on the weekend with their only loss on day 1 against Arkansas State's Sarah Millard and Anna Grigerova in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). The doubles duo improved to 5-3 together this fall.
Thoughts from Head Coach Dash Connell
"I thought it was a great weekend. We have been working hard all fall and this is the cumulation of everything. We went 16-3 this weekend, that's a good statement of how far we have come in just a few months as a team."
On how the team has progressed this fall
"It's a day-by-day process. You could tell in this last match, Dani (O'Neill) was struggling, Maria (Turchetto) started doing well and they connected for that match. There have been connections happening with the team and during practices."
