LYNCHBURG, VA. – Liberty forward Michael Huss has been selected the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week by the league's communications directors, the OVC office announced this morning.
It is the first time this season that a Flame has been the conference's Offensive Player of the Week and the second time Huss has been named the OVC Offensive Player of the Week during his career. Last season, the forward garnered the honor for the week of Sept. 19.
This past week, Huss netted the first hat trick of his career as Liberty (3-3-1, 1-0) opened OVC play with a 7-1 win over Western Illinois at Osborne Stadium on Saturday. It is the second time this season that the senior from Phoenix, Ariz., has scored two or more goals in a game.
Huss scored the game's first three goals as Liberty jumped to a 3-0 lead. The forward netted the contest's first goal off a corner kick during the 17th minute to give Liberty a 1-0 lead at halftime. Following intermission, he struck for goals during the 55th and 61st minutes to push the Flames' advantage to 3-0.
Huss' hat trick is the first by a Liberty player since Tresor Mbuyu scored three goals in a 5-0 victory at VMI on Aug. 28, 2018. Previously this season, Huss scored two goals in a 5-0 win over Mount Olive to open 2024. He has scored two or more goals in a game four times during his career.
The senior leads the OVC in goals and points. Huss has already set career highs with seven goals and 14 points on the year. Currently, he ranks third nationally in goals per game (1.00/game) and fifth in points per game (2.00/game). In addition, he is ninth in total goals and 24th in total points. The forward also leads the OVC and is 11th in the country with a 65% shot accuracy rate.
Huss and Liberty lead the OVC and are second in the country in scoring offense averaging 2.86 goals per game. The Flames are 17th in the nation in total goals with 20.
Huss and the Flames begin a four-game conference road swing on Thursday. Liberty will head to San Antonio, Texas for an OVC match against the Incarnate Word Cardinals. Match time at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST/7 p.m. CST.
