Merkel, Lehman Highlight Preseason All-ASUN Honors

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Three Lady Flames, Cami Merkel, Mackenzie Lehman and Taylor Gallarello, were honored with selections to the 2024 Preseason All-ASUN Team, the conference announced Wednesday. Merkel was chosen as the ASUN Preseason Player of the Year, and Lehman was selected as the Preseason Midfielder of the Year.
Liberty was picked to finish second in the ASUN Women's Lacrosse Preseason Coaches Poll for the fifth consecutive season, receiving 44 points (two first place votes). The Lady Flames trail Jacksonville, (47 points, five first place votes), who was picked to repeat as the ASUN Champion for the seventh straight season.
Cami Merkel | Preseason Player of the Year
Merkel was a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-ASUN team as an attacker and was chosen as the ASUN Preseason Player of the Year. In 2023, Merkel led Liberty as a sophomore with 45 goals (sixth in ASUN), 18 assists (eighth in ASUN) and 63 points (fifth in ASUN).
The junior was selected to the 2023 ASUN All-Tournament team with nine goals and three assists across two games. The Cumming, Ga. native was selected to the 2023 ASUN All-Conference second team and earned the honor of the ASUN All-Academic team.
Mackenzie Lehman | Preseason Midfielder of the Year
Lehman was also a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-ASUN team and was chosen as the Preseason Midfielder of the Year along with Jacksonville's Lauren Ellis. This is Lehman's third straight year with a selection to the Preseason All-ASUN team. In 2023, Lehman finished second on Liberty with 40 goals, 17 assists and 57 points along with 23 caused turnovers and 36 draw controls.
The senior was also named to the ASUN All-Conference first team. Lehman was tabbed to the 2023 ASUN All-Tournament team after a seven-goal, two-assist performance in two games.
Taylor Gallarello | Preseason All-ASUN team
Gallarello received the only spot for a goalkeeper on the Preseason All-ASUN team. The goalkeeper was honored with a selection to the 2023 ASUN All-Conference first team. The junior made 16 appearances and 12 starts for Liberty in 2023, collecting an 11-2 record (7-0 ASUN) with a 10.28 goals-against average, a .407 save percentage with 70 saves and recorded 20 ground balls and three caused turnovers.
