LYNCHBURG, Va. – Ten months removed from his most recent competition, Liberty All-American Warren Barrett made a victorious return in the men's shot put, Friday at The Burg Open. He was one of the Flames' six event winners at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex in a competition hosted by the University of Lynchburg.
Barrett's winning mark of 61-10.5 earned the Liberty throwers' third first-place finish of the day. Earlier, Efe Latham (53-11) and Desmond Coleman (60-7.75) had swept the women's and men's weight throw titles.
Colleen Schaner (11-9.75) and Anthony Bryan (14-11) swept the women's and men's pole vault titles, while Eva Whiteman took top honors in the women's high jump at 5-5.
Men's Day 1 Recap
Barrett enjoyed a sensational 2022-23 indoor campaign in the shot put, breaking the school record (64-1.25) and placing 15th at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships to become a second team All-American.
However, an injury nixed his outdoor campaign and delayed Barrett's return until Friday. His top mark of 61-10.5, which came in round five, won the competition by 11.5 feet and ranks No. 4 nationally at this early stage of the 2023-24 indoor season.
Coleman has now won both men's weight throw competitions in his collegiate career, after previously taking top honors at the Liberty Kickoff on Dec. 1. His winning throw of 60-7.75 came on Coleman's very first attempt Friday morning, putting him nearly five feet in front of his nearest competitor.
Bryan cleared 14-11 on his third attempt to claim men's pole vault victory. Teammate Hunter Flack made it over 14-5.25 to share second place.
The Flames' other top-three finishers included Cole Peterlin (tie for second in high jump, 6-0.75) and Jordae Edwards (third in shot put, 49-0.75).
Racing unattached, team captain Luke Anderson timed his lean perfectly to capture the men's 60 hurdles victory in 8.44.
Women's Day 1 Recap
All three Lady Flames to win events on Friday are in their first year at Liberty, beginning with Barton Community College transfer Latham. She leapfrogged from third place to first with her final throw of 53-11.
A transfer from Arizona State, Schaner matched the best pole vault clearance of her collegiate career (11-9.75) to lead a 1-2 finish with freshman teammate Sarah Gassman (11-3.75).
Liberty also went 1-2 in the women's high jump, thanks to true freshman Whiteman (season-best 5-5) and Anna Worth (5-1), celebrating her 22nd birthday on Friday.
Patasha Bryan placed among the top three in each of her three events on Friday, taking second in the long jump (18-1.5), second in the shot put (38-11) and third in the 800 (2:21.06).
Redshirting the 2023-24 indoor season, Meredith Engle was neck-and-neck with Bryan in all three of her Friday disciplines. Engle won the long jump by a centimeter over Bryan at 18-1.75, took second in the 800 by 0.92 seconds over Bryan in 2:20.14 and finished third in the shot put at 38-10.5, one centimeter behind Bryan.
Jamie Anderson provided another encouraging return story on Friday. Due to injury, she had not raced on the track since the 2022 ASUN Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Anderson competed in both the mile and 3K, taking third place in the latter (10:34.94).
Liberty signee Allie Zealand was one of the meet's most impressive performers, winning the mile (4:45.53) by 32 seconds over future teammate Samantha Troup (5:17.66) and taking the 800 (2:11.84) by more than eight seconds over Engle.
