Iritxity Irigoyen and Dykema Earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty's Azul Iritxity Irigoyen and Bethany Dykema have earned BIG EAST Weekly honors this afternoon. Iritxity Irigoyen was selected as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while Dykema garnered BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week accolades.
Iritxity Irigoyen is being recognized with this honor for the first time this season and ninth time in her career. Meanwhile, Dykema, earns her first career BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week award.
Iritxity Irigoyen, a goalkeeper, won both of her starts this past week and boasted a miniscule 0.43 goals-against-average, seven saves, a .875 save percentage and one shutout. Liberty's victories included a 3-1 road triumph over No. 6 Virginia last Tuesday and a 1-0 shootout victory at home against American, last Sunday. In the game at UVA, the senior netminder made five saves while yielding only one goal. Iritxity Irigoyen kept the Cavaliers off the scoreboard for the first three quarters, helping the Lady Flames build a 3-0 lead. She also made three saves in the fourth period.
On Sunday versus American, the goalkeeper kept the guests off the scoreboard for 80 minutes and stopped four of the Eagles' five attempts in the shootout. Iritxity Irigoyen made two saves in the match as well in recording her 19th career shutout.
On the year, Iritxity Irigoyen boasts a 4-0 record with a 0.46 goals-against-average (GAA), 13 saves, a .867 save percentage and two shutouts. She leads the nation in GAA (0.46) and ranks third in save percentage (.867) for a Liberty defense that leads the country in GAA (0.46) and is second in save percentage (.889).
Dykema, a defender, was instrumental in Liberty's triumph last week, totaling two goals, one assist, five points, four shots (two on goal), one game-winning goal and one defensive saves in a pair of matches. On Tuesday at Virginia, the fifth-year senior scored Liberty's first two goals, both on penalty corners, and assisted on Lexi Hosler's third goal of the contest. Her assist was the 36th of her career, moving her into second place all-time in program history and only two behind the program record (38 by Serena Barr, 2013-16). Dykema also made a defensive save in the game.
In Sunday afternoon's game against the American Eagles, Dykema and the defense recorded their second shutout of the season, with the Lady Flames prevailing 1-0 in a shootout. Through four games, Dykema shares the team lead in both goals (2) and assists (2) and paces the squad with six points.
Liberty's win at Virginia was its first-ever victory over the Cavaliers in Charlottesville.
Four different Lady Flames have been recognized in the BIG EAST weekly awards through two weeks. A week ago, Jodie Conolly was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, and Reagan Underwood earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition.
