Liberty’s John Hicks (season-best 212-11) and Megan Mann (personal-best 185-4) recorded big hammer throws on the opening day of the Duke Invitational, Thursday at Morris Williams Stadium.
Hicks took the lead with his 212-11 effort in round three, a mark which moved him up to 15th place in the East Region this season. He then ended up fourth overall in the men’s hammer competition after landing five throws beyond his previous season best of 204-2.
The third round was also the best for reigning ASUN Women’s Field Athlete of the Week Mann in the women’s hammer. Her 185-4 effort added seven and a half feet to her personal best and was good for eighth place both in the event and on Liberty’s all-time list.
Mann has now recorded new personal bests in all three of her events within the last six days, after posting a 48-6.75 shot put and 163-1 discus at Saturday’s Virginia Quadrangular.
Mann defeated talented freshman teammate Paola Bueno head-to-head for the first time on Thursday, as Bueno ended up 11th at 182-7.
Later in the day, Liberty picked up 10th-place finishes in both the women’s (Sofia Mojica – 151-7) and men’s discus (Christian Hicks – 159-10) competitions. Standouts Kevin Nedrick and Desmond Coleman were unable to take part in the discus due to a lengthy lightning delay Thursday evening.
