
Lady Flames Earn 2-1 8-Inning Victory at Charlotte

Liberty broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the eighth inning and held on for a 2-1 win over Charlotte, Wednesday at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium.
The Lady Flames improve to 26-14, bouncing back from a 3-0 loss at Virginia last night. Charlotte (24-15) had won five straight games prior to today’s loss.

Notable Numbers
- Liberty outhit Charlotte 7-4 for the game, while the Lady Flames turned their 15th double play of the season. The Lady Flames left seven runners on base while the 49ers stranded three.
- Karlie Keeney (17-6) went the distance, allowing one run on four hits, walking one and striking out seven.
- Sam Gress (14-7) drew the loss, yielding two runs on seven hits, walking two and fanning six.
- Rachel Roupe and Savannah Woodard both went 2-for-4 for the Lady Flames, with Roupe scoring a run. Megan Fortner batted 1-for-4 with one RBI and Rachel Craine drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
- Four different 49ers had one hit each, with Cori Hoffler’s solo homer serving as the only extra-base hit in the game.
Turning Point
- Charlotte’s Ashleigh Washington led off the home half of the first with a high drive to left that Liberty right fielder Rachel Roupe robbed from going over the fence. That play loomed large throughout the game.
- Liberty rallied with one out in the eighth as Hudson drew a walk and Roupe sent pinch runner Lilly Heidorn to third with a single. Craine then lifted a sacrifice fly to left for a 1-0 lead and Fornter then made it 2-0 with an RBI single.
- Savanna Nguyen led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, but a 6-4-3 double play cleared the bases. Hoffer then homered, narrowing the gap to 2-1, but Washington fouled out to end the game.

- Liberty leads the all-time series against Charlotte 19-7, breaking a five-game 49ers winning streak in the series. The last meeting before today was a 7-1 Charlotte win on March 1, 2014. The last Liberty win was Feb. 14, 2003.
- The Lady Flames entered the day with a 41 RPI while Charlotte’s RPI was 27.
- Liberty is now 3-3 in extra-inning games, winning each of its last three extra-inning contests.
