
Liberty Rallies for 5-4 Walk-Off Victory Over Marshall

Liberty erased a 4-1 deficit with a three-run sixth inning, and Rachel Roupe’s walk-off double gave the Lady Flames an eight-inning, 5-4 win over Marshall, Sunday at Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium.
The Lady Flames (4-9) improve to 3-0 at this weekend’s Liberty Softball Classic, while the Herd (10-3) suffered its first setback of the weekend after beating NIU and Princeton.

Notable Numbers
- Marshall outhit Liberty 9-7 for the game, with both teams recording one error. The Lady Flames left 11 runners on base, while the Herd stranded nine.
- Karlie Keeney (3-5) earned her third straight win, allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits, walking three and striking out four in eight innings.
- 2022 Conference USA Pitcher of the Year Sydney Nester (7-2) drew the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits, walking four and striking out 11 in 7 2/3 innings pitched.
- Rachel Roupe batted 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and one run scored. Alexis Soto wet 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
- For Marshall, Rielly Lucas went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Autumn Owen batted 1-for-4 with a homer (her seventh of the season), one RBI and one run scored.
Turning Point
- Marshall appeared to be in command with a 4-1 lead in the sixth. However, Liberty tied it up on two-out RBI hits from Roupe, Rachel Craine and Soto.
- With the game tied at 4-4, the teams entered the eighth inning in the International tiebreaker. Keeney and Howard turned a nifty 1-6 double play to remove the runner from second, and the next batter lined out to Craine at third. Roupe then launched a two-out RBI double in the home half for the winning margin.
Beyond the Box Score
- Marshall leads Liberty 12-7 in the all-time softball series, although the Lady Flames have won the last four meetings. Prior to today, the last meeting between these two teams was a 7-0 Liberty win in the championship game of the 2019 NISC Lynchburg Regional.
- Liberty has won back-to-back games via walk-off for the first time since Feb. 26, 2021, when the Lady Flames earned a 3-2 walk-off victory over Notre Dame and a 4-3, eight-inning win over Villanova.
- Liberty is now 2-4 in one-run games and 2-3 in extra-inning games this season.
- Keeney is now tied with Sarah Ellis (2006-09) and Chandler Ball (2012-16) for sixth in program history with 44 career wins.
- Roupe has reached base safely in each of her last eight plate appearances, dating to last night’s win over Princeton.
- Howard extended her hitting streak to a team-best eight games.
