
Liberty Falls to Maryland 4-0 in Second Match of Home Doubleheader

The Liberty Lady Flames dropped the back end of a doubleheader to the Maryland Terrapins 4-0 on Friday afternoon. The Lady Flames (6-2) fall to 0-2 all-time against the Terrapins. Liberty fought hard throughout every match but came up short, ending their five-match win streak.
Maryland (6-1) took the doubles point, as Liberty faced a tall task in doubles with the Terrapins boasting a pair of ranked doubles teams in No. 18 Mary Brumfield and Selma Cadar and No. 53 Minorka Miranda and Marta Perez Mur. Liberty earned a big win on court one from Tiffany Nguyen and Micaela Ode Mitre, topping the No. 18 Brumfield and Cadar team with a 6-2 score.
Liberty topped the Norfolk State Spartans (0-3) earlier in the day with a 4-0 outcome to open the doubleheader.

How It Happened
• Liberty dropped the doubles point with losses on court two (6-2) and court two (6-2). Liberty's Nguyen and Ode Mitre picked up a win over the No. 18 ranked doubles team for Maryland, Brumfield and Cadar, with a 6-2 score. The victory was the duo's first-ever ranked doubles win as a unit.
• Maryland won the first singles point of the day on court six, with Liberty's Elsa Kirch dropping the match to Hannah McColgan 6-0, 6-1.
• The Terrapins got their second point on court six, where the Lady Flames' Ode Mitre fought to a tiebreaker in the first but ultimately lost to Francesca Feodorov 7-6 (4), 6-1.
• Maryland picked up the match-clinching fourth point on court two, with Liberty's Alexandra Almborg falling to Minorka Miranda 7-5, 6-3.
• The Flames had three matches go unfinished, as the match was played to clinch. Liberty sophomore Maria Juliana Parra Romero was leading 6-4, 5-2 against Selma Cadar at the time the match ended.
• Reigning ASUN Player of the Week Esther Lovato's match was unfinished in the second set with the junior fighting Marta Perez Mur to a 4-6, 6-5 score.
• With those matches going unfinished, both Parra Romero (5-0) and Lovato (6-0) remain undefeated during the spring season.
• Liberty's Tiffany Nguyen also had her match against Kallista Liu on court four cut short with Nguyen up in the third set 4-6, 6-4, 3-1.
• Maryland was the second Big Ten team that Liberty has faced this season after besting Michigan State 4-2 last Friday for the first win over a Big Ten program in team history.
Next Up
• The Lady Flames return to action 9 a.m. Sunday morning to play North Texas (7-1). The match will also be played at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
• The Lady Flames will face North Texas for the fourth time since Liberty head coach Jeff Maren came over from the Mean Green where was an assistant in 2013. Liberty is 2-2 against UNT all-time, with its previous meeting last season ending in a 4-1 win for the Lady Flames.
