Liberty Earns 2 Wins at ISCA Open

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Liberty freshman Kamryn Cannings set a new program record, highlighting Liberty's participation in the 2023 ISCA Open, held Wednesday through Saturday at Liberty Natatorium.
Cannings was one of six Lady Flames competing at the meet (also Kaycee Cannings, Malia Francis, Heather Gardner, Genna Joyce and Abbie Shaw).

- Fr. Kamryn Cannings – 50 freestyle (5th place in 26.47; qualified for A Final in 26.39); 100 butterfly (1st place in 59.82; qualified for A Final in 1:01.01); 100 freestyle (3rd place in 56.38; qualified for A Final in 57.04)
- Sr. Abbie Shaw – 100 backstroke (2nd place in 1:02.94; qualified for A Final in 1:02.42)
- Sr. Heather Gardner – 100 breaststroke (4th place in 1:12.14; qualified for A Final in 1:11.84); 200 breaststroke (7th place in 2:46.32; qualified in 2:41.52)

- So. Kaycee Cannings – 50 freestyle (11th place in 27.71; qualified for B Final in 27.36); 200 freestyle (6th place in 2:08.57; qualified for A Final in 2:09.39); 100 freestyle (12th place in 59.70; qualified for B Final in 1:00.37).
- Kamryn Cannings won the 100-meter butterfly on Friday, setting a new program LCM record at 59.82. The previous record as set by Alicia Finnigan (1:00.21) in 2019. Cannings also became the first Lady Flame to win an event at a national-level meet with Friday's 100 butterfly victory.
- Malia Francis' winning 200-meter backstroke time of 2:14.83 on Saturday set a new lifetime best for Francis.
- This is the 13th season in a row that Liberty has had participants compete in USA Swimming national meets, and seventh time at a meet hosted in either November or December (also 2011, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021).
- This meet falls inside of the qualifying window for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, so all American athletes at the meet were aiming for those qualifying marks. The Cannings sisters, from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, earned qualification to the 2024 Canada Olympic Team Trials.
- Kamryn Cannings met the Canadian Trials standards with her efforts in the 100 fly (59.82), 50 free (26.39) and 100 free (56.38).
- Shaw swam a lifetime-best 1:02.42 in the 100-meter backstroke prelims on Friday, coming within .53 seconds of the U.S. Olympic Trials standard of 1:01.89.
- Heather Gardner clocked a lifetime-best 2:41.52 in the 200 breaststroke.
- The 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind., June 15-23, 2024. The 2024 Canada Olympic Team Trials will be held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, May 14-19.
- Earlier this fall, Gardner earned a spot in the 100-meter freestyle for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
