LYNCHBURG, Va. – The host Flames closed out the Liberty Kickoff with six event victories, Friday at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex, including a trio by throwers. Katie Urbine also set a Liberty freshman record with her 12-11.5 pole vault clearance.
Women's Day 2 Recap
Liberty got Friday off to a flying start in the women's weight throw, sweeping the top three places and five of the top seven. Paola Bueno won with a mark of 64-6, followed by Megan Mann (personal-best 60-1) and Annika Hantho (personal-best 56-0.5).
The Lady Flames also grabbed four of the top five positions in the women's shot put, led by Mann (47-1.75). Sofia Mojica's third-place throw (44-8.25) moved her up to No. 9 in program history.
Indea Cartwright was the Lady Flames' lone victor on the track, clocking 8.34 for top honors in the women's 60 hurdles final. Amani Hankton followed in fifth place in 8.75, a time which is tied for No. 9 on Liberty's all-time list.
Patasha Bryan outdistanced the pentathlon field by 133 points with her winning score of 3,814. Freshman Paige Greenhagel topped the event's lower section with 3,143 points, ranking fifth overall out of 22 pentathletes on Friday.
Urbine's 12-11.5 pole vault clearance in her collegiate debut placed fourth in one of the meet's most competitive events. She took down the Liberty freshman standard of 12-9.5 set by her assistant coach, Taylen (Langin) Rey, on two different occasions in 2019. Urbine is already tied for No. 4 in program history for the event.
Running her first track race as a Lady Flame, Monmouth transfer Katelyn Locker placed a close second in the women's 1,000. Her time of 2:50.97 sits No. 3 all-time at Liberty.
Men's Day 2 Recap
Throwing the weight for the first time in competition, Desmond Coleman upset teammate John Hicks (a three-time ASUN champion in the event) for victory by 1.25 inches (63-11.5 to 63-10.25). Coleman's mark ranks No. 4 on Liberty's all-time ledger. Christian Hicks' big personal-best mark of 58-4 put him in fourth place in the final standings.
Liberty sophomores Joshua Smith (47-11.25) and Shane Wang (47-6.5) produced a 1-2 finish in the men's triple jump.
The Flames notched a runner-up finish in the only throwing event they failed to win on Friday, thanks to freshman Jordae Edwards' 53-1.75 shot put.
Liberty's best track event was the 1,000, where Isaiah Schulties (2:25.64) and Brendan Pitcher (2:25.89) placed 2-4. Pitcher's performance earned him a spot in the Flames' top five all-time for the five-lap event.
