BOSTON, Mass. – Liberty All-American Calli Doan opened her final indoor track & field season in impressive fashion, Saturday at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. She became the second Lady Flame ever to clock a sub-16:00 5K indoors, crossing the line in 15:58.96 at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.
Racing for the first time since earning All-America honors in the steeplechase in June, Doan got pulled along to a fast pace, along with teammate Adelyn Fairley, in the third of seven 5K sections. Doan hit the 3K split in 9:33.67, followed closely by Fairley in 9:34.91. Doan and Fairley are two of only four women in program history who have ever run that fast for an indoor 3K, much less as part of a 5K.
Doan saved her fastest 200-meter split (35.25 seconds) for last, making sure she broke 16:00. The only other Lady Flame to do so indoors was program record holder Ednah Kurgat, who ran 15:47.89 in Seattle on Feb. 12, 2016.
Doan is the first CUSA woman to post an indoor sub-16:00 5K since 2021, when Grace Forbes of Rice clocked 15:53.36 at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Fairley finished in 16:17.62, shaving eight seconds off her indoor 5K best and completing a successful fall of racing. She was the CUSA women's cross country runner-up and garnered her second career all-region medal with a 22nd-place finish at the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships. Fairley ranks No. 3 on Liberty's indoor 5K list behind Kurgat and Doan.
