PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – No. 1 seed Liberty fell 3-1 to No. 2 seed Old Dominion in the title match of the 2023 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship on Sunday afternoon at Temple's Howarth Field.
No. 6 Liberty drops to 17-2 on the season and sees its 12-game winning streak snapped. Meanwhile, ODU improves to 14-5 and has won 12 straight games. The Monarchs receive the league's automatic bid to the 2023 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship. The Lady Flames will await their fate and see if they earn an at-large bid. The NCAA Field Hockey Selection show will air live tonight at 10 p.m. on NCAA.com.
Liberty featured three players on the BIG EAST All-Tournament team, and all three are graduate students. Jodie Conolly, Bethany Dykema and Milagros Arteta earned all-tournament team distinction for their efforts this weekend.

Liberty scored first in the game, but Old Dominion followed it up with three unanswered goals to secure the title. The Lady Flames opened the scoring with a rebound goal from Bethany Dykema in the 19th minute, her sixth goal of 2023.
In the 23rd minute, ODU evened the score at 1-all with a penalty corner goal from Frederique Zandbergen, assisted by Sacha de Gier. Both teams attempted four shots in the opening half, with the Monarchs holding the 4-2 edge in penalty corners.
ODU converted its first penalty corner of the second half, as senior Marlon de Bruinje ripped a shot into the left side at the 35:35 mark for the go-ahead goal and a 2-1 Monarchs lead. Early in the fourth quarter, Nicole Fredericks put the No. 2 seed ahead 3-1 with a goal from in front.
Liberty pulled its goalkeeper with just over eight minutes left. The Lady Flames recorded six shots and three penalty corners but could not put another one in the back of the cage.

Dykema notched Liberty's lone goal today and added an assist in the semifinals. Conolly tallied a goal and an assist on Friday against the Wildcats.
