The Liberty swimming & diving team swept Atlantic Sun Swimming & Diving weekly honors for the third time this season.
Sophomore Mary Herndon was named ASUN Women's Diver of the Week, while freshman Kamryn Cannings was tabbed as ASUN Women's Swimmer of the Week. These two swept the weekly honors on Oct. 3 as well, while on Oct. 31, Abbie Shaw (Swimmer) and Maddie Freece (Diver) earned weekly honors.
Herndon receives her third career weekly honor and second this season. Cannings joins Gianni Pitto (Oct. 2, 2018; Jan. 22, 2019) as the only two Liberty athletes to receive conference swimmer of the week awards following twice as freshmen.
Hailing from Lugoff, S.C., Herndon had a fantastic meet at the 2023 TYR '85 Invite, earning NCAA Division I Zone Championships qualifying scores on both one-meter (279.10) and three-meter (289.60) diving. Her winning score of 279.10 is the Lady Flames' best one-meter score so far this season, as she led a 1-2 Liberty finish with teammate Maddie Freece. Herndon opened the weekend by scoring 282.95 in three-meter prelims, earning the top seed at night. Despite improving to 289.60 in the A Final, she finished fourth overall. Herndon is one of two Lady Flames so far this season to qualify for the Zone Championships on both one-meter and three-meter.
A native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, earned NCAA B cut times in the 200 freestyle (1:45.67), 100 butterfly (52.51) and 200 butterfly (1:58.32), with all three efforts being the top time in ASUN this season. Her winning time of 52.51 in the 100 fly is the 31st fastest in the nation this season, while her 200 free set a new program record and is tied for 42nd nationally. Cannings finished second in the 50 freestyle in 22.97. She swam a 52.32 on the third leg of the winning 400 medley relay, as Liberty (3:36.90) came within .17 seconds of tying its program record. Cannings clocked 23.75 on the third leg in a victorious 200 medley relay. She led off both the 800 free relay (split 1:45.67) and 400 free relay (split 49.57). To start the meet, Cannings swam 1:00.44 to win the LCM 100-meter butterfly on Thursday.
Select Liberty athletes will compete at the 2023 ISCA Open, Nov. 29 through Dec. 2 at Liberty Natatorium.
