
No. 6 Liberty Earns Outright BIG EAST Regular Season Crown With 5-0 Win Over Georgetown

TOWSON, Md. – No. 6 Liberty topped Georgetown 5-0 in its regular season finale to earn the outright BIG EAST Conference regular season title, Friday afternoon at the TU Field Hockey Complex.
With the win, the Lady Flames have earned their second outright league title in the last three years. Liberty has earned at least a share of the regular season championship in three straight seasons.
The Lady Flames wrap up the regular season with a 16-1 overall record and perfect 7-0 BIG EAST mark and enter postseason play with an 11-game winning streak. Liberty's 16-1 regular season for a .941 winning percentage is its best in school history. The Lady Flames have finished 7-0 in BIG EAST regular season action twice in the last three years.
Georgetown falls to 1-16 overall and 0-7 in the BIG EAST. The Hoyas have dropped nine straight matches.
Five different Liberty players scored in the game, highlighted by first goals in Liberty uniforms from Anna Miller and Danielle Hamm. Milagros Arteta, Bethany Dykema and Kyleigh Faust also found the back of the cage today.

Turning Point
Liberty scored its first of five goals in the game in the early going, as Milagros Arteta found the back of the cage off a deflection in front of the goal on a penalty corner for the visitors. Arteta's eighth goal of 2023 put Liberty ahead 1-0 at the 4:20 mark.
The Lady Flames earned 10 penalty corners and attempted 16 shots in the opening half but only led 1-0 at the break. That changed midway through the third quarter (37:27 mark) when Anna Miller scored from in front for her first career goal and a 2-0 Liberty lead. The Lady Flames added to the lead at the end of the third period when Danielle Hamm scored on a penalty corner, her first goal in a Liberty uniform and second goal of her career.
Liberty tacked on two more goals in the fourth quarter to settle the final score at 5-0. Bethany Dykema scored on a rebound in the 55th minute for her fifth marker of the year. Just over two minutes later (56:20 mark), Kyleigh Faust scored on a penalty stroke for a 5-0 Flames advantage.

- This was Liberty's eighth shutout of the 2023 campaign and second straight shutout.
- Four different Lady Flames notched assists: Jodie Conolly, Pima Iturraspe, Reagan Underwood and Bethany Dykema. Conolly and Dykema both share the team lead with 11 assists. Dykema is up to 45 career assists, most in program history and tied for the most among active Division I players.
- Liberty recorded a season-high 35 shots in the game, its seventh most in a game in school history. The Lady Flames held the Hoyas to one shot, their fewest shots surrendered in a game this season. Coming into the day, Liberty's season high in shots was 22 against James Madison (Oct. 15).
- The Lady Flames' 17 penalty corners today are also a season best. Liberty's previous season high was 15 versus JMU, Oct. 15. The Liberty defense held the Hoyas to one penalty corner.
- Senior goalkeeper Azul Iritxity Irigoyen made one save on the day to pick up her seventh shutout of the season.
- Faust is a perfect 3-of-3 this year on penalty stroke attempts.
- Arteta ranks second on the team with eight goals. Her eight goals are a single-season career high. Arteta scored six goals in 18 games while at Boston College two seasons ago.
- Miller's first career goal came while celebrating her birthday today.
Liberty is the No. 1 seed for the upcoming 2023 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. The championship will be held next Friday through Sunday at Temple's Howarth Field in Philadelphia, Pa. The Lady Flames' semifinal game will be at 1 p.m. against a to-be-determined opponent.
