Conolly Earns 3rd BIG EAST DPOW Award of 2023

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty field hockey's Jodie Conolly has earned her third BIG EAST Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week honor of the year.
In addition to Conolly's accomplishment, Bethany Dykema was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the first time this season and second time in her career.
Conolly, a defender, led the Lady Flames in goals (2), assists (2, tied) and points (6) this past weekend in wins over Quinnipiac and James Madison.
In Sunday's 3-2 home win over JMU, Conolly celebrated her Senior Day with two second half goals, including the game winner in the 52nd minute. The fifth-year senior's first goal came in the 32nd minute, and the game-winning tally midway through the fourth period put the hosts ahead 3-2. Conolly's second goal was her sixth of the season and 23rd of her career.
In last Friday's 2-1 victory at Quinnipiac, she assisted on both fourth quarter goals in lifting the Lady Flames to the win. Her first assist came on Reagan Underwood's penalty corner goal in the first minute of the final period (45:49 mark), and she followed it up with an assist to Dykema on a penalty corner less than two minutes later (47:45 mark).
Conolly's two-assist game on Friday was the seventh of her career and gave her a team-best 10 assists on the season. This is Conolly's second career 10-plus assist season while at Liberty. The fifth-year senior tallied 11 assists during the fall 2021 campaign.
Through 15 games, all starts, Conolly leads the team in assists (10) and points (22) and is tied for second in goals (6).
Dykema tallied one goal, a pair of assists and four points in this past weekend's two wins. She scored the game winner on a penalty corner early in the fourth quarter against the Bobcats. On Sunday, the Newport News, Va. native assisted on both goals from Conolly, including the game winner in the 52nd minute. It was her sixth career two-assist game and gave her seven assists on the season.
In 15 games this season (all starts), Dykema ranks second on the team in assists (15), third in points (15) and sixth in goals (4). The defender is the program's all-time career assists leader with 41 for her career.
Conolly and Dykema's efforts versus Quinnipiac helped Liberty secure a berth into the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship for an eighth straight year. The tournament will be held at Temple's Howarth Field, Nov. 3-5.
Collectively, Liberty has received 18 awards (16 BIG EAST, two national) through the first eight weeks of the 2023 season, including seven of the league's eight BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Conolly, Dykema and No. 6 Liberty (14-1, 5-0 BIG EAST) will host BIG EAST foe Connecticut (5-10, 2-3 BIG EAST), Friday evening. Match time is 6 p.m. at the Liberty Field Hockey Field and can be seen on ESPN+.
