
Flames Finish Run at ITA Atlantic Regionals

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty Flames finished play at the ITA Atlantic Regionals on Sunday. Luis Felipe Miguel opened the day with a thrilling match, which he dropped in three sets. Liberty is hosting the six-day, 24-team event at the Liberty Tennis Complex.
The Flames conclude the ITA Atlantic Regionals with a 15-10 overall record and a 12-7 singles record.
Miguel was matched up against Virginia's James Hopper. Miguel lost a tight first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4). In a crucial point at 5-4 in the tiebreak, Hopper hit a serve that clipped and dribbled over the net for an ace that made the score 6-4 in Hopper's favor.
The Goiania, Brazil native stormed back in the second set 6-2 and secured a 4-1 lead in the third set. Hopper stormed back and won five straight games to win the match, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-4.
Miguel was paired with long-time partner Deji Thomas-Smith for a doubles match against Delaware's Euan Mackenzie and Tobey Lock. The two put up a good effort but fell, 8-4.

The pair was nearly able to mount a comeback after being down 6-4 but was unable to grab a lead after forcing a tiebreaker. The final score of the match was 8-7 (7-4). The two will play a consolation side on Sunday.
