CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Despite securing the initial doubles point, No. 68 Liberty (8-8) was not able to earn a match point in singles play, falling on the road Sunday at No. 56 Charlotte (11-5).
The defeat snaps a three-match winning streak as the Flames fall to an even .500 win percentage this season.
Liberty came out strong in No. 1 doubles with Benjamin Sparks and David Ekpenyong taking care of Ivan Dreycopp and Emilio Sanchez Bronzetti 6-2. The 49ers got one back on court two as Siwanat Auytayakul and Chase Robinson fell 6-3 to Moritz Muenster and Vasco Prata. The deciding doubles match was on court three as Rodrigo Santiago Arraez and Guy Vorwerk faced a deep deficit. The pair were down 1-4 and 2-5 but rallied against Andres Medus and Danny Yassine to steal a 7-5 triumph.
The Flames were unable to take advantage of the point in the singles round. Charlotte earned triumphs in the upper half of the lineup. The 49ers' No. 118 Vasco Prata dispatched Arraez 6-3, 6-0. Dreycopp ousted Auytayaul 6-2, 6-3 before Medus handled Carl Roothman 6-4, 6-4.
Charlotte clinched the match-clinching fourth point with a 6-4, 6-3 Bronzetti triumph over Robinson in the No. 5 singles match. As play continued, Sparks and Vorwerk each pushed their foes to three sets, but ultimately came up short.
Thoughts from Head Coach Derek Schwandt
"Thank you to Charlotte for the match and the opportunity to get better. We will reset and learn from the match, we will sharpen our games and our minds."
