Liberty’s Warren Barrett continued his impressive start to the 2022-23 indoor track & field season by winning the men’s shot put, Saturday at the Virginia Tech Invitational. His second shot put title of the young season headlined the Flames’ second and final day of competition at Rector Field House.
Men’s Day 2 Recap
Barrett had opened his season with a bang at the Liberty Kickoff on Dec. 2, winning the men’s shot put with a new Liberty record mark of 63-3.5. Saturday’s winning effort measured 62-2.25, putting Barrett more than a foot and a half clear of runner-up Tyson Jones from Virginia Tech.
Barrett was joined inside the top five by teammates Kevin Nedrick (third place, 57-0.25) and Desmond Coleman (fifth, personal-best 52-4.5).
At last year’s Virginia Tech Invitational, Kennedy Sauder burst onto the scene in his collegiate debut by winning the men’s high jump and tying the program record of 7-1.5. Fast forward a year, and Sauder finished second on Saturday with a season-best 6-10.75 clearance. Fellow Flame Gabriel Willis also achieved a new season best (6-8.75) while coming in fifth.
Less than 24 hours after clocking a Liberty freshman record 34.10 in the men’s 300, Elonzo Burroughs placed third in the men’s 400 with a 49.09 clocking.
First-year Flame Omari Lewis notched his second top-five finish in as many days, running 21.93 to win his heat and take third overall in the men’s 200 dash. He had previously come in fifth during Friday’s men’s 60 final.
Anders Janes pole vaulted a season-best 16-0.75 which placed him 10th among the event’s seeded section.
Women’s Day 2 Recap
Kacy Cox got Liberty’s day started off on the right foot, posting a runner-up finish in Saturday’s opening event (women’s high jump). Her first-attempt clearance at 5-5 was the best of the sophomore’s collegiate career to date.
Megan Mann unleashed a 46-8 shot put during the sixth and final round to set a new indoor personal best and equal her lifetime best, indoors or out. She placed seventh in the competition and solidified her hold on the No. 5 spot on Liberty’s all-time list.
Makenzy Mizera recorded a fifth-place long jump finish with a mark of 18-9.75, a day after placing fourth in the women’s triple jump.
