
Shaw Finishes 41st in Phillips 66 Nationals 200 Backstroke

Liberty junior Abbie Shaw earned national-level experience on Wednesday, finishing 41st in the 200-meter backstroke at the Phillips 66 National Championships at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine, Calif.

• Shaw swam a lifetime-best 2:17.95 in morning prelims, finishing 41st overall in the 200-meter backstroke. She placed second in her heat, the first of seven preliminary heats in the event.
• Team USA members claimed the first four spots in qualifying, led by Isabelle Stadden's 2:09.69. Claire Curzan (2:10.84), Rhyan White (2:10.94) and Leah Smith (2:11.01) rounded out the top four. Stadden, Curzan and White are all past World Championship bronze medalists in backstroke, while Smith won bronze in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2016 Olympics.
• The eighth A finalist qualified in 2:12.07, while it took 2:13.11 to make the B Final and 2:15.12 to earn a spot in the C Final.
• This is the 12th season in a row that Liberty has had participants compete in USA Swimming national meets. This is the fourth time that Liberty has competed in a USA Swimming sponsored national event at Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine (also 2013 U.S. Open and 2014 and 2018 Phillips 66 National Championships).
