Liberty placed three student-athletes on the 2022 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Women’s Swimming & Diving Team.
The VaSID All-State Women’s Swimming & Diving Team featured nomination and voting by sports information directors from all around the Commonwealth of Virginia. This is the fourth year that VaSID has sponsored a swimming & diving awards program.
Sophomore Maddie Freece (diving) was named to the first team, while junior Jessica Schellenboom (breaststroke) and senior Lauren Chennault (diving) received second-team honors.
Freece is Liberty’s first VaSID All-State first team honoree in program history. Also, Liberty’s three VaSID All-State honors are the most by any non-ACC program this season. Freece, Chennault and Schellenboom all receive their second career VaSID All-State Team honors.
A native of Lansdale, Pa., Freece has been named CCSA Women’s Diver of the Year twice already. Freece was named the 2022 Co-Most Outstanding Diver of the CCSA Championship Meet, winning one-meter diving with a program-record score of 320.75 while finishing third in three-meter, scoring 305.90. Just two years into her career, she already has three conference individual titles and four CCSA podium finishes. The sophomore went on to compete at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, finishing 17th on three-meter and 25th on one-meter. Freece was the only CCSA women’s diver to earn a spot in finals at the NCAA Zone Championships this year.
Hailing from Coppell, Texas, Lauren Chennault made the podium in both one-meter and three-meter diving in all four conference meets in which she has competed. Chennault is one of just two CCSA divers all-time to earn eight CCSA podium finishes. She placed second in both one-meter and three-meter diving at the 2022 CCSA Championships. Her collegiate-best 318.60 on one-meter this year ranks second in program history, while she is the program record holder on the three-meter (317.85). Chennault was named Co-Most Outstanding Diver of the 2020 CCSA Championship Meet. She qualified for NCAA Zone Diving Championships all four years of her career.
Schellenboom, a Grand Rapids, Mich., native, earned her fifth career conference podium finish this season, placing second in the 200 breaststroke in a lifetime-best 2:12.81. She finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke at the 2022 CCSA Championships, swimming a personal-best 1:01.45. That time would have finished in the top three at every previous CCSA Championship since the first conference meet in 2008. She currently ranks second in program history in 200 breaststroke and third in 100 breaststroke. Schellenboom clocked NCAA B cut times in both breaststroke events this season and also competed on three relays at the CCSA Championships.
These student-athletes helped the Lady Flames earn their fourth straight CCSA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship title, as Liberty defeated second-place FGCU by 302.5 points. That is the third-largest margin of victory in CCSA Championships history. Liberty has now won five conference championships in program history.
