
Jacksonville Downs Liberty 6-1, Friday

Right-hander Mason Adams pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings to lead the host Jacksonville Dolphins past the Liberty Flames 6-1 in the opening game of a three-game ASUN series, Friday evening at John Sessions Stadium.
Adams locked in a pitchers’ duel with Liberty’s Garrett Horn through the first four innings of the contest with a two-out single giving the Dolphins a 1-0 advantage. Adams scattered three hits, striking out eight and walking two.
Center fielder Derek Orndorff and first baseman Logan Mathieu each had two hits apiece for Liberty. Mathieu had two doubles and drove in the Flames’ only run of the contest.
Liberty drops to 16-8 overall and 3-4 in the ASUN. Jacksonville improves to 14-10 and 2-5 in the ASUN.

Turning Point
With trailing 1-0 with two outs in the top of the fifth, Mathieu doubled off the top of the right field wall to keep the inning alive. Shortstop Jake Lazzaro followed with a ground ball which was misplayed by Dolphins second baseman Jesus Pacheco, putting Liberty runners on the corners. However, Adams was able to get catcher Gray Betts to ground out Pacheco to keep the Flames from tying the contest.
Beyond the Box Score
- This weekend’s three-game series matches the last two ASUN Tournament Champions. Jacksonville won the title last season, while Liberty captured the championship in 2019.
- Liberty has now lost three ASUN Conference games in a row. It is the first time the Flames have done that since joining the conference in 2019.
- With two hits in the contest, Mathieu records his second multi-hit game of the season. Orndorff collected his seventh.
