
Flames Top Phoenix 4-3 on Friday for First Road Win

The visiting Liberty Flames earned their first road victory of the season, topping Elon 4-3 at Piedmont Indoor Tennis.
The Flames improve to 2-3 on the season and snap a two-match losing skid. Elon sees its record slip to 0-3. Liberty has now won three straight matches against the Elon Phoenix dating back to the 2020 campaign.

How It Happened
• Liberty had to overcome an early 1-0 deficit in the match after dropping the doubles point. Elon won the doubles point with victories on courts one and three.
• The Phoenix’s first doubles triumph came from Chung-Han Tsai and Daniel Martin, 6-2 over the Flames’ Deji Thomas-Smith and Christiaan Worst. Elon secured the first point of the day with a 7-6 win from Nicholas Campbell and Nicholas Condos over Josh Wilson and Goncalo Ferreira.
• Liberty’s doubles win came from the No. 2 pairing of Nicaise Muamba and Rafael Marques Da Silva, a 6-3 decision against Kyle Frankel and Camilo Ponce.
• Liberty won four of the five completed doubles contests, triumphing at No. 3, No. 4, No. 1 and No. 2 singles in that order. The Flames evened up the match at 1-1 with Worst’s No. 3 singles win over Condos (6-1, 6-3).
• Liberty took its first lead of the day, 2-1, when Thomas-Smith bested Ponce 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 4 singles slot. The Flames’ advantage grew to 3-1 when Muamba knocked off Frankel 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
• Elon’s lone singles triumph came from Tsai (No. 6), 6-4, 6-4 over the Flames’ Zion Heaven.
• Liberty’s Marques Da Silva scored the match-clinching fourth point. After trading sets with Campbell on court two, the third-year Flame bested Campbell in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4) in the third set to win 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 (4).
• The match between Thando Longwe-Smit (Liberty) and Martin (Elon) on court five went to Martin, 6-7. 6-4, 6-3.
• Worst paces the Flames with a 4-1 singles record.
• Friday’s match, which was originally scheduled to be played at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, was moved inside to Piedmont Indoor Tennis due to expected inclement weather.
Next Up
• The Flames will be back in action next Friday at Penn State (1-2). Match time is set for 5 p.m. at the Indoor Tennis Center in University Park, Pa.
• Liberty bested Penn State 5-2 on Feb. 21, 2020, in what was the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The win was the Flames’ first in school history over a Big Ten program.
