
Lady Flames Complete Shutout Sweep, 8-0 Over Maine

Liberty completed a doubleheader sweep, shutting out Maine 8-0 in five innings to wrap up the Liberty Softball Classic, Saturday at Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium.
The Lady Flames (8-6) have won eight out of their last nine games and went 3-1 at the Liberty Softball Classic. Maine falls to 1-8 on the season after going 0-4 this weekend.
Liberty outscored the Black Bears a combined 14-0 over today’s doubleheader, and outscored opponents 20-6 over four games played this weekend.

- Liberty outhit Maine 8-5 for the game, as four of Liberty’s hits went for extra bases. Maine committed the game’s lone error. The Black Bears stranded five runners, while Liberty left four runners on base.
- Karlie Keeney (5-2) earned her fifth win of the season, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out two batters in 4 1/3 innings pitched. Paige Bachman allowed one hit and struck out one batter in her first collegiate pitching action, tossing the final 2/3 of an inning.
- Alexandra Gruitch yielded seven runs, five earned, on seven hits, walking four and fanning two in three innings. Emily Reid yielded one run on one hit, walking one in one inning pitched.
- Devyn Howard went 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, one run scored and one RBI. Caroline Hudson batted 1-for-1 with two walks, a homer, two RBI and two runs scored. Mary Claire Wilson doubled and Raigan Barrett tripled.
- Brianna Neely went 2-for-3 for Maine.
Turning Point
- Liberty built an 8-0 lead on the strength of a two-run second inning and three-run frames in the third and fourth innings.
- After Kent walked to lead off the fifth, a fielder’s choice gave Liberty one out. Bachman then came in for Keeney, striking out the first batter she faced. Neely then singled. Kya Enos hit a drive to left center that center fielder Mary Claire Wilson chased down, smashing into the fence after securing the game-ending catch.
Beyond the Box Score
- Liberty leads Maine 6-1 in the all-time series.
- This is the second time this season that Liberty has thrown two shutouts on the same day. On Feb. 18, Karlie Keeney no-hit Maryland before McKenzie Wagoner and Naomi Jones combined on a five-inning two-hitter of FAU.
- Liberty has not allowed a run in its last 14 1/3 innings pitched, since a two-out RBI by Charleston Southern in the fifth inning last night.
- The Lady Flames are 75-10 at home since the start of the 2018 season.
- Howard set a new program record with hits in 10 straight at bats, beginning with yesterday’s game against George Washington.
