
No. 24 Lady Flames' Rally Falls Just Short in 6-5 Loss to No. 9 Missouri

Liberty nearly pulled off a late comeback, narrowing a 6-2 deficit to one run with a three-run sixth inning. The No. 24 Lady Flames left the bases loaded to end the game, falling 6-5 to No. 9 Missouri, Sunday at Sleepy Hollow Softball Complex.
Missouri finished the season-opening Northern Lights/Southern Nights Tournament with a 3-2 record, while the Lady Flames are 0-4 on the season, with three of their four losses coming to top 25 opponents. The Tigers were ranked in all four major national polls, being ranked as high as No. 9 by Softball America.

Notable Numbers
- Missouri outhit Liberty, 10-7, while the Tigers committed three errors. Liberty left nine runners on base, leaving the bases loaded in both the second and seventh innings. Liberty posted season highs in runs scored and hits today.
- Missouri’s Jordan Weber (2-0) earned the win, allowing two runs on one hit, walking two and striking out three in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Laurin Krings came on to get the two-out save, walking one and striking out one. Tiger starter Megan Schumacher pitched 2 1/3 innings, yielding two runs (one earned) on four hits, walking one.
- Karlie Keeney (0-2) allowed six runs on 10 hits, walking one and striking out three in seven innings. Emily Kirby pitched to two batters in the sixth, issuing a walk and hitting a batter.
- Jenna Laird, Kimberly Wert and Alex Honnold had two hits apiece for Missouri, with Honnold hitting two doubles and Laird posting one double and two RBI. Riley Frizell drove in two runs in a pinch-hit at bat.
- Liberty’s Lou Allan and Raye Green both went 2-for-4, with Green driving in two runs. Rachel Roupe scored twice, while Raigan Barrett and Rachel Craine drove in one run each.
Turning Point
- With the game tied at 2-2, Missouri jumped ahead by scoring four times in the top of the sixth. Keeney yielded a two-run single to Frizell and then walked Casidy Chaumont to load the bases. Kirby then entered, walking in a run and hitting the next batter. Keeney reentered, ending the inning with a 1-2-3 double play.
- Liberty narrowed the gap to 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth. With two on and nobody out, Green lined a two-run single to right center off of reliever Emma Nichols. Later in the inning, Canetto reached on an error, allowing pinch runner Lilly Heidorn to score. Nichols fanned Devyn Howard for the third out.
- The Lady Flames rallied with one out in the home half of the seventh, beginning with a single by Allan. Krings then entered the circle, walking Barrett before Roupe reached on an error to load the bases. Missouri erased the tying run at the plate on a fielder’s choice, and then Krings struck out Craine to end the game.
Beyond the Box Score
- Missouri is the third straight nationally-ranked opponent that Liberty has faced, following No. 19 Kentucky on Friday and No. 23 Northwestern yesterday.
- Today was the third all-time coaching meeting between Liberty head coach Dot Richardson and Missouri head coach Larissa Anderson. Richardson’s Lady Flames topped Anderson’s Hofstra Pride 2-0 in 10 innings in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Knoxville Regional, the first NCAA postseason victory in program history.
- Missouri is 2-0 all-time against Liberty, with both games being decided by just one run. The Tigers won the only previous meeting, on Feb. 14, 2020, when the 10th-ranked Tigers held off a late rally to down Liberty 5-4.
- Current Liberty volunteer assistant coach Sami Fagan played for Missouri from 2014-16, being named an All-American as a senior.
- Mary Claire Wilson has now scored a run in 10 out of 13 career pinch-running appearances, including eight out of her last nine. Freshman Lilly Heidorn has scored a run as a pinch runner in each o Liberty’s last three games.
- Redshirt freshman Raigan Barrett recorded her first career hit and first career RBI today. Janessa Plummer recorded her first hit as a Lady Flame as well.
Up Next
The Lady Flames will next head to Orlando to take on UCF on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at UCF Softball Complex. After that midweek complex, Liberty returns to the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex for fives games at THE Spring Games, starting Friday at 1:30 p.m. against Maryland.
