
No. 19 Kentucky Edges 24th-Ranked Liberty 3-1

No. 19 Kentucky broke a 1-1 tie with a sixth-inning, two-run homer by Erin Coffel, edging the 24th-ranked Liberty Lady Flames, Friday at the Northern Lights/Southern Nights Tournament.
Kentucky has opened the season with three straight wins, topping Wisconsin last night before posting victories over both Michigan State and Liberty today. The Lady Flames fall to 0-2 after setbacks to Iowa and Kentucky on Friday at the Sleepy Hollow Softball Complex.

Notable Numbers
- Kentucky managed six hits while holding Liberty to two base hits. The Wildcats committed three of the game’s four errors. The Lady Flames left six runners on base, while Kentucky stranded two. Liberty left two runners on base to end both the third and sixth innings.
- Alexia Lacatena (1-0) earned the win, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out five. Izzy Harrison yielded one run, unearned, on one hit in 1 1/3 innings before Miranda Stoddard pitched 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief.
- Providence, Ky., native Karlie Keeney (0-1) drew the loss for the Lady Flames, yielding three runs on six hits, walking one and striking out two. Keeney and the Liberty defense held 2021 first team All-American Kayla Kowalik hitless in three at bats.
- Coffel went 1-for-3 for Kentucky, and her two-run homer proved to be the difference. Five Wildcats added singles.
- Lou Allan and Kara Canetto both singled for the Lady Flames, and pinch runner Lilly Heidorn scored her first career run.
Turning Point
- Trailing 1-0 in the top of the sixth, Liberty tied the game with an unearned run. With one out, Denay Griffin walked and Allan singled. Stoddard then entered the circle for Harrison. Hudson then hit a grounder to third, and a wild throw to first allowed Heidorn to score from second and sent pinch runner Naomi Jones to third. Hudson then stole second, but a Rachel Craine groundout and Mary Claire Wilson flyout ended Liberty’s go-ahead bid.
- Kentucky rallied with one out in the bottom of the sixth, as Lauren Johnson singled through the left side. Coffel then lined an 0-1 offering out of the park in left, giving Kentucky a 3-1 lead.
- A one-out walk to Rachel Roupe in the seventh brought Canetto to the plate as the tying run, but her 6-4-3 double play ended the game.
Beyond the Box Score
- Kentucky now leads the all-time series 6-0, a series whose last meeting was the season opener in 2020, which 15th-ranked Kentucky won 6-2 over Liberty.
- Liberty’s Caroline Hudson and Karlie Keeney both started the 2020 season opener against Kentucky, their first career game. Canetto is the only other remaining player who started today and was also in the 2020 opening-game starting lineup against Kentucky.
- Liberty is now 6-8 all-time when playing as a nationally-ranked team. Liberty is 1-4 in games where both teams are ranked.
