Michael Huss scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime, sending the Liberty Flames to a 1-0 victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, Tuesday evening at Spry Stadium.
After a scoreless regulation and first overtime, midfielder Gora Gora lofted a crossing pass to the far left post which Huss slide and launched into the back of the net for the golden goal during the 104th minute.
The Liberty defense was strong all evening, allowing only three Wake Forest shots on goal.
The victory is the fifth straight for the Flames, who move to 5-3 on the season. Wake Forest drops to 4-3-1. Liberty’s win snaps the Demon Deacons’ three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1)

Turning Point
After a throw-in on the left side of the 18-yard box, Flames midfielder Arnold Onyango took the ball away from a Wake Forest defender and sent a pass to Gora near the top right of the 18-yard box. The freshman midfielder lifted a pass to the right side of the goal, where Huss slid and kicked the ball into the net for the game-winner.
Key Stats & Notes
- Wake Forest outshot Liberty, 15-7. However, Liberty only allowed the Demon Deacons three shots on goal. The Flames also had three shots on goal during the night.
- Wake Forest also held the advantage in corner kicks, 10-3.
- The Flames record their second shutout of the Fall of 2021. Liberty defeated Radford 3-0 in regulation on Sept. 11.
- Huss’ game-winning goal is his second goal of the season. He joins Noah Holmes and Michael Catanzarite as Flames with more than one goal thus far in the campaign.
- Blake Franzen and Danny Cordero shared the Liberty net in the contest. Franzen started the game and made two saves during the first half. Cordero took over at the start of the second half and record one save during the final 58:26. Trace Alphin played the entire game in goal for Wake Forest, making one save.
- Liberty’s five-game winning streak is its longest win streak since also winning six consecutive contests in 2011. During the streak, Liberty has outscored its opponents, 10-3.
- With the win, the Flames even their road record on the year at 3-3.
